Development agreement signed with Natoaganeg First Nation

On July 8th, 2024, the New Brunswick Department of Indigenous Affairs shared the following announcement:

FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has signed a development agreement with Natoaganeg (Eel Ground) First Nation to support the community’s priorities related to social, environmental, cultural and economic matters.

“The development agreement with Natoaganeg we signed today is a new, modern partnership focused on the needs of the community,” said Indigenous Affairs Minister Réjean Savoie, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “Agreements like this can provide long-term financial sustainability for First Nations, and we are committed to working with other First Nations on further partnership opportunities.”

The Regional Development Corporation will provide more than $18.8 million to the community over five years.

“Natoaganeg is pleased to partner with the province to address priorities like housing and infrastructure improvements in our community,” said Chief George Ginnish. “This partnership is a step in the right direction, and we look forward to working together on our other priorities in the future.”

This is the fifth such agreement signed between the government and a First Nation since June 2023. Previous agreements have been reached with Neqotkuk (Tobique) First Nation, Welamukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation, Amlamgog (Fort Folly) First Nation and L’nui Menikuk (Indian Island) First Nation.
